Course Details
In an era of exclusive private clubs and distant destination resorts, the opening of a public, municipal-affiliated golf course in an urban setting is notable—made headline-worthy when Tiger Woods attended the March 2023 grand opening—and The Park exemplifies a growing wave of public/private partnerships that have revived municipal courses nationwide; sited on the former Dick Wilson–designed West Palm Beach Golf Course (opened in 1947 and long regarded as a top municipal layout), the property closed in 2018 after years of decline, then sat unused until a citizen-led campaign—anchored by figures including PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh and bolstered by $56 million in individual donations, with Woods among the contributors—reimagined it as a community hub combining an 18-hole course, a state-of-the-art practice facility, a lighted nine-hole short course, a two-acre kids-only golf zone, and retail and dining amenities (the PGA of America is not involved in the project); architects Hanse and Wagner erased the Wilson routing to start fresh on the site’s deep, sandy soils, initially aiming for a Sand Belt–style feel but ultimately shifting toward exposed sand areas and expansive sightlines that produced very wide fairways, greens angled to receive shots from specific landing zones, and highly contoured putting surfaces—a design approach that, in Hanse’s words recalling Tiger’s visits, created a “one-ball course” where losing a ball is unlikely.
