Course Details
Originating from a modest seven-hole layout on Senator Charles B. Farwell's estate in 1892, the Onwentsia Club traces its roots. Crafted by Mr. Hobart Chatfield-Taylor amid flowerbeds and trees using sunken tomato cans for holes, this early course, dubbed Lake Forest Golf Club, quickly gained popularity by 1893. Recognizing congestion issues, Mr. Chatfield-Taylor arranged for a new nine-hole layout on Leander McCormick's farm, now the location of Lake Forest Country Day School. Transitioning from a sheep-filled landscape to a refined golfing destination, the club's founders, including McCormicks and Farwells, aimed for excellence. Renamed Onwentsia, meaning "meeting place" in Iroquois, the club flourished on Henry Ives Cobb's 175-acre farm, with Mr. Chatfield-Taylor spearheading its transformation into a premier establishment.
