Course Details

Ten years after making his mark on the golf world with the original Bandon Dunes, David McLay Kidd returned to Oregon to create Tetherow — a bold and complex course in Bend that stood in stark contrast to his earlier work. While it shares Bandon’s firm fescue turf that rewards the ground game, Tetherow is defined by a rugged, sculpted landscape filled with humps, hollows, deep bunkers, and even a few lakes. It’s visually stunning but notoriously demanding, requiring precision and power at every turn. The course marked a turning point in Kidd’s career — a phase when his designs became more punishing than playful, prioritizing challenge over charm. In time, Kidd recognized that Tetherow’s difficulty could overwhelm the average golfer, inspiring a philosophical shift that led to his later, more forgiving creations like Gamble Sands and Mammoth Dunes, where creativity and recovery became the essence of the experience.
